A handsome vintage four-string tenor banjo made by A. O. Windsor of Birmingham, one of Britain’s leading pre-war banjo manufacturers.
Believed to date from the late 1920s or early 1930s, the instrument carries the distinctive brass “The Whirle” Windsor Maker Birmingham badge on its headstock. It has a particularly attractive bird’s-eye maple resonator, figured maple neck, dark fingerboard with simple dot position markers, nickel-coloured metalwork and a substantial armrest.
The banjo is in good cosmetic condition for an instrument approaching 100 years old. There are some light marks, scratches and signs of age and use, but the woodwork presents very well and no major external damage is apparent. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
It is fitted with a modern Remo Weatherking banjo head and comes with the padded soft case shown. The bridge and some other serviceable components may also have been replaced during its life.
The banjo has not been professionally inspected or set up by us. It is therefore being sold as a vintage instrument that may benefit from tuning, new strings or a routine professional setup before regular use.
A lovely British-made vintage instrument with an especially attractive maple resonator, suitable for a player, collector or period music enthusiast.
Collection from Lowestoft is preferred because of the age and nature of the instrument. Sensible offers are welcome.
