The D-42 sits at the very top of Martin's dreadnought lineup, just below the D-45. At Martin, the higher the model number, the more lavishly appointed the guitar. It features abalone purfling around the top and rosette, an ebony fingerboard and bridge, and the classic snowflake inlays. Construction-wise, it has a solid Sitka spruce top, solid rosewood back and sides, and a mahogany neck. This particular example was built in 1996 and comes complete with its original hard case.
