This Martin D-18 1939 Authentic Aged is immediately enchanting when you open the case. How authentic can the patina of a newer guitar actually be? Wonderfully artificially darkened top, the aged finish, partly with hints of playing marks and stains, is convincing across the board. Martin has spared no effort here to produce the most exact possible replica of a classic Martin D-18 from the "Golden Era", in this case modeled on an acoustic from 1939. Authentic ingredients such as bone glue in combination with the selected and heat-treated tonewoods develop a very special sound. This makes the guitar sound incredibly open and warm. The Adirondack spruce top in particular is an important component here. The use of mahogany for the back and sides also makes an excellent contribution to the great tone development and fullness of sound. The bracing and the shape of the headstock, neck and bridge are also based exactly on the 1939 model. In addition, this guitar has been given a wafer-thin aged finish, so that the hairline cracks in the thin nitrocellulose lacquer are also responsible for the fantastic, really "played-in" sound. This process called Vintage Tone System (VTS) artificially ages the wood replicating the sound and appearance of a real old guitar in a phenomenal way. The narrow neck with a round neck profile (Authentic1939 Standard Taper) ensures fast chord changes. The guitar is particularly suitable for flatpicking and chord playing. Acoustically it is extremely assertive thanks to its extremely good projection. The bass is really tight and this enormous presence in the lows merges with the overall sound with the bright, pearly trebles also sounding particularly rich and fat. The sustain is fabulous, the overtones exciting. This guitar delivers a real listening pleasure even when playing the simplest cowboy chords.
