Star (Pre Tama) Vintage 1960s/70s

For sale is a beautiful vintage STAR 3-piece drum kit, made in Japan, most likely dating from the late 1960s / early 1970s.

STAR was one of the drum brands used by Hoshino Gakki before the emergence of TAMA, making these early Japanese kits particularly interesting to collectors and enthusiasts of vintage MIJ drums.

The kit features a beautiful Black Diamond Pearl / Black Oyster-style wrap, classic teardrop lugs and grey-painted shell interiors.

Configuration:

• 22” × 14” bass drum
• 13” × 9” rack tom
• 16” × 16” floor tom
• Approx. 9 mm thick multi-ply shells
• STAR teardrop lugs
• Vintage chrome hardware
• Vintage tom mount and arm
• Internal mufflers on both toms, fully functional
• Hoops and tension rods
• Drumheads included

The three drums form a matching and coherent kit, with the same wrap, hardware and shell construction.

Regarding the hardware:
The three original floor tom leg brackets had become too fragile for regular use, so I replaced them with modern PEARL brackets, which are much stronger and make the floor tom perfectly reliable for playing and gigging. The three original STAR brackets are included with the kit, so they can be reinstalled if originality is preferred.

I am also currently servicing the bass drum spur brackets, as their original threads are slightly worn with age. The aim is to keep the original hardware while making the bass drum fully reliable for regular use.

The kit naturally shows signs of age and use consistent with a drum set that is more than 50 years old. The wrap and chrome have developed a beautiful vintage patina.

Sonically, it has a wonderful vintage character: warm, round and resonant, with a punchy 22×14 bass drum and a deep, powerful 16×16 floor tom.
