In the summer of 1959, Leo Fender introduced a new line of amplifiers called the 'Brownface'.
Featuring a new brown Tolex covering around the amplifier and a Maroon or Wheat-colored grille cloth, the new line of amps entered a new ERA of sound. The control plate was moved from the top of the amplifier to the front, as it was more convenient for the player to access. Furthermore, the plate was now dark brown instead of chrome with brown ‘Barrel’ knobs, a leather or plastic handle (depending on the model) and the ‘professional’ series featured tremolo.
The Fender Princeton amp has been around almost since Fender's inception and it has remained a popular amp in Fender's line ever since. The 1961-1963 Brownface is a 15W amp with tremolo bias wiggle on-board. Additionally, it was fitted with a larger 10" speaker and was the first fixed bias Princeton. This design used a cathodyne phase inverter which is circuit that was found in 5E3 Tweed Deluxe and many other amps of day. However, by the Brownface years the Princeton was the only Fender amp that used the cathodyne phase inverter circuit. In truth the Brownface wasn't a new design but rather a very slightly updated version of the 5F11 Tweed Tremolux!
The Brown Princeton is a shop favourite of ours and has great cleans but the overdrive is accessible and tremendously pleasing. The bias wiggle trem is a real treat for the ears and gives a nice soft tremolo.
This particular example is Model 6G2, has "M C" tube chart date stamps (March 1963), a AB1163 chassis stamp and SA1163 AB1063 cabinet stamps and it sounds like heaven. The replacement Fat Jimmy Amplifiers Vintage Series Alnico 10inch speaker is a dream combination to this amp but the original speaker is also included in the sale. It still has the most important original 125A10B 606238 Output Transformer (Schumacher week 38 1962) and a 230Volt 125P1B power transformer which is a replacement so you can easily use it in Europe without using a power converter. Also the handle was replaced for a nice looking leather vintage style handle. Tubes are a nice set of matching NOS 5Y3GT rectifier tube, 2 x NOS 6V6GT power tubes, 12AX7 preamp tube, 7025 preamp tube.
It really is a joy to play and the sound engineer will love you for using it, whether it is live on stage or in the studio. Check out the reviews on youtube and the all-knowning Internet. It will be hard to find someone who doesnt like it! (Ask Chris Stapleton...)
