The Roland Juno-106, released in February 1984 by Roland Corporation, is a six-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer renowned for its warm, rich sound and user-friendly interface. Below is a detailed overview of its features, notable users, and songs that feature the Juno-106, based on available information.
Features and Characteristics
- Polyphony and Oscillators: The Juno-106 offers six-voice polyphony with one digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) per voice, producing sawtooth, pulse/square, and sub-oscillator waveforms, along with a white noise generator. The DCOs ensure tuning stability while maintaining analog warmth.
- Filters: It features a 24 dB/octave analog low-pass filter (VCF) with resonance that can self-oscillate, creating rich, harmonic textures, and a non-resonant high-pass filter for tonal shaping.
- Chorus Effect: A signature feature is its lush, built-in analog chorus effect, available in two modes, which adds depth and a distinctive, warm texture to sounds, particularly pads.
- Envelope and Modulation: The synthesizer includes an ADSR (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) envelope generator for shaping amplitude and filter response, and an LFO for modulating pitch, pulse width, and filter cutoff, enabling effects like vibrato and filter sweeps.
- MIDI and Patch Storage: As one of Roland’s first MIDI-equipped synthesizers, it supports parameter sequencing and integration with modern setups. It has 128 patch memory slots, a significant upgrade from the Juno-60’s 56 patches.
- Interface: The Juno-106 has an intuitive, hands-on interface with sliders and buttons for real-time sound tweaking, making it accessible for beginners and professionals alike.
- Additional Features: It includes polyphonic portamento, two voice allocation modes for predictable note assignment, and a 61-key keyboard with Roland’s performance lever for pitch bend and modulation.
- Sound Profile: Known for its lush pads, punchy basses, bright stabs, and soaring leads, the Juno-106 is versatile across genres like pop, electronic, house, and ambient. Its analog sound is described as warm, fat, and smooth.
