Behringer Edison EX1
Unit has been fully tested and works as it should with no issues. Comes with power cord. No box or instructions.
The Behringer Edison EX1 is a hardware psycho-acoustic spatial and stereo image processor released in the 1990s. It allows users to manipulate the width, depth, and placement of a stereo field, making narrow mixes sound wider or re-balancing the stereo image of a finished master.
Key Features & Controls
The front panel is designed to be highly tactile, relying on five primary knobs to reshape the stereo image:
- Stereo Spread: Adjusts the width of the stereo image, scaling from mono, through the original stereo, to an ultra-wide effect. Sound On Sound
- LMF (Low/Mid Frequency) Spread: Fine-tunes the stereo width specifically for the lower-mid frequencies.
- Balance: Shifts the left/right balance of the stereo field.
- Center Distance: Controls the prominence of sounds panned dead center, allowing you to push lead vocals or instruments forward or backward in the mix's depth.
- Output Gain: Controls the overall volume out of the unit.
- Phase Correlation Meter: An LED display that shows the degree of phase correlation (from to ) to ensure the audio remains mono-compatible without cancellation issues.
Hardware & Connectivity
- I/O: Features servo-balanced inputs and outputs with both XLR and " TRS connectors.
- Safety Features: Includes a relay-controlled hard bypass that will automatically pass audio even if the power fails, as well as a soft-start circuit to prevent speaker thumps on power-up.
Common Applications While it can be used on a final stereo mix for mastering, the EX1 is widely regarded in pro-audio communities for creative routing. It is commonly used in studios to:
- Widen and "smear" stereo reverbs or effects returns.
- Process individual stereo synthesizers, keyboards, and drum overheads.
- Fix phase issues in existing stereo recordings.
