The tonal signature of the MXR Distortion III lies in a dense, harmonic, and dynamic range. At low gain, it behaves like a “sweet” overdrive, adding sustain and presence to riffs and solos. As the gain increases, you get a thicker distortion with solid crunch and good punch, ideal for rhythms that need to stay tight and clear. The direct response allows you to clean up the sound by lowering the guitar volume and add more bite by playing with a stronger attack. The Distortion III is found in rock and stage-oriented setups, used by artists such as Keith Urban and Taylor Hawkins, among others.
The pedal is from the 2000s and has a bit of patina, but it works just like it did on day one.
