Franz Jühling was a German luthier, born in 1838, who worked in Dresden between 1880 and 1906. He was known for his high-quality commercial instruments, which combined excellent design, craftsmanship, and varnish work. Jühling was awarded gold medals at exhibitions in Paris and Brussels and made significant advancements in the development of varnishes for string instruments. Additionally, he ran a large workshop equipped with electric machinery and produced seven-string lutes, known as "Jühling Testudio Lutes."

After 1884, Jühling began working independently following the end of his collaboration with Richler. His instruments were in demand worldwide and appreciated by both musicians and collectors. Although information about him is limited, it is believed that his son, Walter Jühling, born in 1880, may also have been a luthier and continued the family tradition.

This instrument is a fine 4/4 violin attributed to Franz Jühling, a respected German luthier active in Dresden in the late 19th century. The violin bears an internal printed label reading:

“Franz Jühling, Streichinstrumentenmacher, Dresden 1884”

Crafted in the tradition of Saxon violin making, this instrument features:

A two-piece maple back with broad, attractive flame

A finely grained spruce top

A hand-carved scroll with a smooth spiral

A warm orange-brown oil varnish consistent with late 19th-century German workmanship

Elegant and well-balanced f-holes

Original construction techniques consistent with known examples from Jühling’s workshop

The craftsmanship and overall stylistic characteristics are consistent with violins produced in Dresden during the 1880s and closely match surviving instruments known to originate from the hand or atelier of Franz Jühling.

The label is typical of the period — a decorative border bearing the name “Franz Jühling, Streichinstrumentenmacher, Dresden” and a handwritten date “1884.” The style and typography are consistent with known examples found in other instruments attributed to Jühling.

The body shape is classical and matches the outlines commonly seen in late 19th-century German instruments.

The f-holes are elongated with clearly rounded terminals, which is characteristic of certain Dresden-based workshops.

The back is made from beautifully flamed two-piece maple, a feature associated with higher-quality instruments.

The varnish appears to be oil-based and warm in tone, with natural signs of wear — an indication of genuine age.

The scroll is finely carved, with smoothly flowing spirals, which is typical of instruments made by trained luthiers rather than mass production.

The visible annual growth rings in the spruce top and the flamed maple back are consistent with tonewoods traditionally used in German violin making.

The varnish is unevenly preserved, a trait commonly seen in instruments with authentic origins from the 1880s.
