Since its introduction in 1934, the Gibson Super 400 has represented the pinnacle of Gibson's archtop craftsmanship. The CES version, introduced in 1951, brought the model into the electric era by pairing its remarkable acoustic platform with a set of humbuckers, creating one of the most respected jazz guitars ever produced. This 2002 Gibson Custom Shop Super 400 CES reflects that legacy beautifully, combining traditional hand carved construction with premium materials and meticulous attention to detail. Built with a hand carved solid spruce top, hand carved figured maple back and figured maple sides, it delivers an impressive acoustic voice long before it is plugged in. The 5 piece figured maple neck with walnut laminations, ebony fingerboard and elegant appointments throughout complete an instrument that feels every bit as refined as it looks.

Amplified, the pair of Gibson '57 Classic humbuckers faithfully captures the guitar's natural warmth, articulation and dynamic response. Rich chord voicings, singing single note lines and exceptional note separation make this an inspiring instrument for jazz, blues and beyond. The engraved Super 400 tailpiece, gold hardware, multi ply binding, mother of pearl split block inlays and flowerpot headstock inlay reflect the level of craftsmanship that has defined Gibson's flagship archtop for generations. The signed James W. Hutchins Master Model label indicates that the instrument was built under the supervision and final inspection of Gibson Master Luthier and Senior Design Engineer James W. Hutchins, whose approval is widely regarded as a hallmark of quality for Custom Shop archtops from this period.

This Super 400 CES remains in excellent condition with only light signs of use. There are a few light scratches and small dings around the body, along with minor cosmetic wear to the humbucker covers. The nut has been professionally altered and raised, and the guitar continues to offer an effortless playing experience worthy of its flagship status. It is supplied in its original Gibson Custom Shop hardshell case.
