The E Signature Channel was extensively designed to recreate the unmistakable sonic character and workflow of the legendary SSL 4000E consoles — one of the defining sounds of modern recording history.

One of its most unique features is SSL’s Variable Harmonic Drive (VHD) circuitry, allowing the engineer to shape the overload behaviour and blend 2nd-order “tube-style” harmonics with more aggressive 3rd-order transistor-style harmonics.

The unit also includes the famous SSL “Listen Mic Compressor”, originally developed for studio talkback microphones but later discovered by producers and engineers as a secret weapon for explosive drum room sounds.

That iconic crushed ambient drum sound became one of the defining aesthetics of countless classic rock recordings and is closely associated with the huge, explosive drum sound popularised during the 1980s by engineers working with artists such as Led Zeppelin and Phil Collins.

The famous “Bonham-style” room sound and aggressive gated ambience techniques owe a huge debt to this legendary SSL circuitry and workflow philosophy.

The unit has been carefully maintained in a smoke-free professional studio and is fully operational.
