YAMAHA SB-70 'DHARMA' BASS Natural Mahogany ***Very Rare*** 1970-73 - w/OHSC

This is the rare and top of the line SB-70 - the so-called "Dharma" bass in natural mahogany.

They were only produced for a very short period, between 1972 to 1973, hence the rarity.

Background-wise...

Yamaha's bass range of the day comprised the single pickup SB-30, and twin pickup models, SB-50 and SB-70. These were all single cutaway and medium scale.

While the pickups and hardware on both the 50 and 70 models are the same, the 70 had higher grade body material (mahogany in this case) plus appointments such as the chevron inlays and shapely body binding.

They all possess the 'German Carve' body form which has a sculptural, muscular quality, especially in this finish. The natural mahogany on this model looks especially cool under the lights.

Condition-wise...
Overall, very good. Still has the protective paper wrapping to the rear access panel.

It's all original including the often-absent bridge & pickup covers, mute bar (complete with foam!) and Yamaha hard case.

There are a few minor blemishes to the body and couple of little neck nicks behind the third fret (See photos) but they don't detract from the gorgeousness or playability of this very rare beast.

New strings, great intonation. These are extremely well balanced on or off the strap.

Tone-wise, these are really versatile. The tonal sweep offers a lovely wide range with the bridge pickup in particular having a super, fretlessy 'pop!' to it.

In summary...

This is a beautiful instrument to play, hear or just to gaze lovingly at.

In this condition and fully complete with its original Yamaha hard case it's rare and collectable all round.
