Some cymbals are built to follow a catalog. Others are built to see what’s possible.

The GM Designs Prototype Series is where our newest ideas, unusual concepts, and experimental builds live before they ever become part of the main lineup — if they ever do at all. These are the cymbals that start as a question at the workbench: What if we changed the profile? What if the bell was oversized? What if the weight, hammering, lathing, holes, shape, or finish pushed the sound somewhere completely different?

Unlike our Mod Shop Series, these are not refreshed or reworked pieces getting a second chance. Prototype cymbals are original GM Designs experiments — first runs, rare concepts, and eccentric builds made to explore new sounds, new textures, and new possibilities. Some may inspire future catalog models, while others will remain completely one-of-a-kind.

Each Prototype Series cymbal is evaluated, finished, and demoed in-house here in Austin, Texas. The listing includes a demo of the exact cymbal you’ll receive, so you can hear its true voice before purchasing. Experimental, eccentric, and rare — these pieces are for drummers looking for something outside the usual catalog, and maybe even ahead of it.
