Rare WEM Watkins tape delay, model Copicat MKII, “Made in England”, from 1961. This model still bears the “Watkins” logo on the top of the case, as seen in the early models, later renamed WEM. It is 100% original and mechanically like new. This model uses the acclaimed BSR magnetic heads. Due to the thinness of the tolex (blue/cream), it is common for it to show its age, but in this case, the overall condition is quite good. This model belongs to the second series of Copicats made by Watkins, which began in the late 1950s! Its electronic circuit is entirely point-to-point constructed, and during the 1960s there was another version, MKIII (the last tube model). The Copicat has 3 different echo types (HALO, ECHO, REPET). The MKII version existed with a black chassis (more common) and in this blue color. The original footswitch in the same color (rare) is included. In this model, as an added advantage, it's possible to connect the Copicat only as a pre-amplifier, with the echo OFF. Since the echo motor is independently controlled via the MOTOR switch (resulting in less signal interference and wear on the heads and tape). This Copicat has been completely recapped, with the coupling and electrolytic capacitors replaced. The power outlet and cable were also replaced with new ones. In terms of sound, these tube Copicats have incredible pre-amplifiers, delivering a pure and rich tube sound, full of harmonics. The unit accommodates 3 tubes, which are in very good condition: 2x ECC83s and 1x 6BR8.
Back then, Copicats didn't have a erase head; this was done by a magnet embedded in the tension arm. It has been fully serviced by a specialized technician and is 100% ready for professional use and recording. Maintenance was performed due to the unit's age of over 60 years.
Maintenance:
- All heads aligned, tuned, cleaned, and demagnetized
- Electronic circuit capacitors replaced
- New tape installed
Many groups at the time began using the Copicat. Probably the group that made them most famous was The Shadows, who used a Copicat in the song "Apache." The song became a huge hit, and suddenly everyone wanted a Copicat. Urban legend says that the first 100 units sold out instantly, with people queuing in the street to get their hands on a Copicat. Among other groups of the time, for example, Johnny Kidd & The Pirates in the song "Shakin' All Over," Marino Marini in the song "Come Prima," and The Arctic Monkey when recording their 'Suck It And See' album also used a tube Copicat.
