G-string is a Made-in-Hawaii brand established in 1993. From its founding until the late 2000s, it was crafted by multiple artisans, but now the workshop has moved to the US mainland and production is handled by Derek Shimizu. This particular instrument is a used item made in 2003. It features a Hawaiian koa body, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, friction tuners, Honu (sea turtle) abalone body inlay and fingerboard dot inlay, and double soundholes. Currently, they are handcrafted in the US and prices have skyrocketed, but at the time, they were manufactured by a team in the Oahu workshop and offered a wide range of instruments at more affordable prices. They quickly gained popularity and were even called one of the three major Hawaiian guitar brands. This instrument has double soundholes. Rather than being round, the style is modeled after the shape of a turtle's shell, giving it a cute design. It produces a sweet sound characteristic of Hawaiian koa, with a rustic and charming feel that is unique to Hawaiian-made instruments. The body top, back, and headplate are made of beautiful figured Hawaiian koa wood, resulting in a simple yet elegant look. Weather checking, common in the paintwork of this era, is visible in several places. There are some minor surface scratches, but none are noticeable, and the instrument remains in beautiful condition.
