email from Bjorn Juhl:

I shall tell a little about this fuzz.

Now the Pep fuzz was initially copy of Gibson FZ-1 more or less but later evolved. it seems at least one but probably more of the British guitar elite imported the FZ-1 to get the new sounds.

Now there is a famous underground guitarist here by some called the King of Cheese for his immense collection of fuzzy pedals many in cheesy designs so they fall apart now and then.

This guy was also one of my early guitar heroes.

Now making this fuzz from ground up I took two NPN CV1712 germanium transistors so unit can have standard polarity.

These are military spec transistors so the y are probably more stable than transistors used in Pep and Maestro FZ1.

Anyway, I biased both transistors linearly so that at a very very weak input sound would be undistorted…. Well as close as possible anyway. Then I put a sensitivity potentiometer at input because this way many more sounds can be accessed and I also put a bass control so that fully ccw it does the buzz but as you advance sound gets more full bodied and softer I think between bass control and fuzz control there are many sounds not heard from other fuzzes I have played. There are some truely unique sounds in this that have musical usefulness beyond and this would definitely be one of my all time favorite fuzzes. —-Bjorn
