SML Marigaux S200 2000 - Mozambique Ebony

For sale is an SML Marigaux S200 Bb clarinet, made in France, serial number 01621, Mozambique ebony.

The instrument was purchased new approximately 25 years ago and has seen extremely little use.

This S200 comes from the former clarinet production of the historic French maker SML Marigaux, now internationally renowned primarily for its oboes. Marigaux no longer offers clarinets, making these French-made instruments relatively uncommon today.

The original Marigaux catalogue describes the S200 as a Boehm-system Bb clarinet with 17 keys, 6 rings, nickel-plated keywork and a naturally seasoned Mozambique ebony body. The original purchase invoice for this particular instrument describes it as “tout ébène” — all-ebony construction.

The wood is especially attractive: very dark, with rich reddish-brown figuring and highlights visible under direct light and in the close-up photographs.

Marigaux historically promoted its clarinets for their tone, ease of response and intonation.

Condition :

I recently played the clarinet again. It responds well, the pads appear to seal correctly, and I did not detect any apparent air leaks. The pads are visually clean, white to cream in colour, with no obvious cracking or tearing.

The tenon corks have recently been lightly maintained with Selmer cork grease.

The wooden body shows no visible cracks. The nickel-plated keywork is in very good overall condition for its age. There are a few small superficial age-related marks on the underside of some keys, together with a small brown-orange cosmetic mark on the bell rim. These details are clearly and honestly shown in the photographs.

I am not a professional woodwind technician, and the clarinet has not been recently serviced or professionally leak-tested. It is therefore not being represented as freshly overhauled, although it played correctly during my recent test.
