The Yamaha EMR-1 (released in 1988) is a vintage, half-rack digital drum module and rhythm accompaniment expander. Originally designed to complement home keyboards, organs, and the Clavinova line (often alongside other companion units like the EMT-1 FM module and EMT-10 PCM synth), it has gained a niche following today for its distinct lo-fi digital aesthetic.
• Sound Generation: It uses a PCM rompler engine with 37 low-resolution (8-bit/12-bit) digital percussion samples including standard elements like kick, snare, hi-hat, congas, claps, and cuica.
• Presets & Variations: It features 32 preset rhythm styles (such as 8-beat, 16-beat, country, and Latin styles).
• Arrangement Controls: Standout hardware features include "Large" and "Small" ensemble buttons. Pressing these dynamically strips down or thickens the instrument arrangement of the rhythm block on the fly. It also has dedicated buttons for Intro, Fill-In, and Ending controls.
• Onboard Sequencer: It includes a basic, non-savable pattern chain sequencer meant for piecing together structures during live sets or performance practice.
