The Bogner Ecstasy 101B is one of the most legendary boutique tube amplifiers in modern guitar history and has been considered for decades one of the flagship models of the California-based amplifier manufacturer founded by Reinhold Bogner. The Ecstasy was developed with the goal of combining the dynamics and organic character of great classic tube amps with the flexibility of a modern multi-channel amplifier. The 101B has become arguably the best-known Ecstasy model and offers an enormous tonal range, from an open clean sound to British-style crunch and powerful high gain.
At the heart of the head is the classic tube configuration consisting of four EL34 power tubes and six 12AX7 preamp tubes. At full power, it delivers 100 watts with ample headroom, dynamic range, and punch. However, the built-in power attenuator (which cuts power in half) and the option to switch between Class A and Class AB operation allow you to significantly alter the amplifier’s character and perfectly adapt it to the stage, studio, or rehearsal room.
The three channels cover an exceptionally wide range of tones. The Green Channel delivers open, dynamic clean tones that can be adjusted from crystal-clear to slightly distorted vintage sounds. The Blue Channel is considered by many players to be the true heart of the Ecstasy: Here, the spectrum ranges from classic Plexi-style crunch to rich, harmonically dense rock gain. The Red Channel expands this sonic palette with significantly more gain (up to high gain/metal) and compression, delivering singing leads as well as massive rhythm sounds without sacrificing the definition and dynamics typical of Bogner.
Particularly remarkable is the extensive control over the behavior of the individual channels. In addition to gain, volume, and tone controls, features such as pre-EQ, boost, and Plexi functions—as well as the characteristic Presence and Excursion circuits—are available. This allows you not only to adjust highs and lows but also to precisely shape the amp’s response, tightness, and perceived punch. As a result, the Ecstasy can take on completely different characters, ranging from a soft, compressed vintage amp to a tight, modern rock amp.
A sound sample of the model featuring Steve Lukather (Toto) can be found above at the end of the photo gallery.
The head comes with the matching Bogner Custom Shop 4x12 Straight Cabinet in a straight birch finish. The four 12" Celestion speakers deliver the foundation typical of a full-fledged half-stack, with enormous punch, spatial projection, and ample volume reserves. With a power handling capacity of up to 240 watts RMS and 16-ohm impedance, the cabinet is perfectly suited for high-powered tube heads and, together with the Ecstasy 101B, forms an uncompromising boutique half-stack.
Visually, the set features the elaborate Bogner design with black “Triskele” Tolex and Salt N Pepper front fabric. The combination is both elegant and timeless, underscoring the amp’s high-quality boutique character.
