Hafler has once again succeeded in delivering a successful product, particularly for the broadcasting and project studio sectors.

It is portable, lightweight and offers all the features of the active TRM 6.1 in a passive version.

The M5 monitor is a compact (5.3-litre) vented 2-way passive speaker for near-field applications, offering unrivalled quality and performance in a truly professional product. The M5’s low profile and the absence of obtrusive or reflective grille details enable a well-focused and reflection-free natural soundstage in small consoles, workstations or meter bridge applications. Although the M5 Monitor is a passive model, it features the technical circuitry and functions that ensure excellent sound quality in any application. The crossover is a 24dB/octave Linkwitz-Riley design, which filters high frequencies to the tweeter and low frequencies to the woofer. The circuit also features optical overload protection and a 0dB/-3dB high-frequency attenuation to adjust the high-frequency level to the midrange, thereby ensuring optimal sound balance. When you combine the M5 enclosure with its technical specifications, it becomes clear that the HAFLER M5 monitor is a major success for Hafler, as it offers reliable reference performance in a compact and portable enclosure at an affordable price.

"The M5 and the NS-10M share this middle ground.

That’s not to say the M5s are average, but their similarity to the NS-10Ms certainly has its merits, and the M5s translate well to home listening too. The Haflers have the same sound as the NS-10Ms, but with more presence and depth. I can hear high frequencies more clearly and ‘see’ the placement of sounds near and far, more so than with the ubiquitous Yamahas.

Hafler has improved on the NS-10Ms by building a loudspeaker that doesn’t sound overly pretty but can handle high amplification levels. Not only can the M5s be driven much harder than the NS-10Ms, but they also sound more pleasant. Rather than buying a pair of NS-10Ms and hoping for the privilege of having to wade through spare parts, I’d get myself a pair of M5s – or, at that price, five straight away."
