In a workshop in Maine, USA, set up specifically for this purpose, Bourgeois Guitars crafts approximately 400 meticulously crafted guitars each year in a historic mill dating back to the 1850s. Dana Bourgeois and his experienced team build instruments using various combinations of tonewoods for players around the world who enjoy the feeling of owning a truly special, exquisite instrument. It takes only a quick glance at this “Vintage HS” to recognize the phenomenal exclusivity of Dana’s guitars. The rich tone of East Indian rosewood combined with a high-quality Adirondack spruce top, a Honduran mahogany neck, authentic pre-war features and animal glue transports you back to a time before the term “vintage” was even used to describe guitars. In addition, an Aged-Tone finish was used here, which not only looks great but is indeed one of the reasons for a truly authentic vintage sound. Decades ago Dana observed that the tops of high-quality guitars “relax” under string tension during the first few years until they reach their maximum stretch, and then “harden” again. During the relaxation phase the bass tones are amplified and the treble response diminishes, often beyond the desirable level; balance is not restored until years later, when the wood hardens again. Thus, in the 1990s Dana modified the traditional dreadnought bracing and was able to successfully counteract this tendency toward imbalance. Consequently, this guitar also delivers a fantastic tonal character; it features a quick response, explosive resonance, high dynamics and a balanced, harmonious tone. Compared to, say, a Martin Dreadnought it offers an even more voluminous, clearer sound in the “pre-war vintage style.” Harmonious mids, solid bass, great definition and silky highs. And thanks to its excellent playability with a medium neck profile this is truly a 100-point acoustic. The guitar is in mint condition.
