ANSALDO POGGI
DA VIA FONTANA
fece in BOLOGNA ANNO 19(22) written in ink.
One picture taken inside others taken in natural daylight (last picture reference)
What is to believed a copy or earlier makers work with a POGGI stamp on the inside and on top of the button as was his trademark. This instrument nonetheless has an incredible soloist sound and would be suited for solo; orchestral/symphony and chamber music. Even folk; fiddle and mariachi especially because of the tonal production. POGGI's Style is widely recognized and go for hundreds of thousands at private sale and auction. This is no student instrument. It does show the hallmarks of an Italian master maybe using POGGI's name to sell his works. The tone proves great care in the workmanship the wood is clearly old dated 1920 meaning it's probably later 1930's to 1950's.
The top is a two piece slab of medium to fine grain no cracks sound post or otherwise, Spruce is excellent condition, AUBERT MADE IN FRENCH Bridge of fine quality and expertly cut. 'F' holes are in tact and nicely fluted showing great care to the making of this fine instrument. Minor varnish damage under the tailpiece from shipping along with scratches all through out the instrument but still sound. The sides are of fine grain maple, with the aforementioned POGGI stamp above the end button.
Fingerboard is well done as is the Purfling both back and front no broken corners to speak of the channeling of the purfling is very fine showing meticulous work.
No open seams to speak of, to appears to have been open at some point probably to affix the facsimile some time decades ago as it shows ware and age both brand and label.
The back is a one piece slab of fine to medium grain spruce showing signs of it's age I would estimate 100 to 80 as wood changes color when aged so it's a fine instrument for a player looking for a big sound. Some varnish damage on the back easily fixed.
Fingerboard is ebony and plays comfortably in all positions.
All other fittings golden/brass tail-piece with Hill fine tuner and 'e' protector are in great shape as is the tail-gut which is new and good Guarneri Chin rest. This is a players instrument. Good for college, symphony/orchestra and chamber or just hobbyist looking for a good fiddle.
NEWLY Strung with Larsen 'Il Cannone Soloist Warm & Broad A' which plays like a dream in all positions and across all strings.
