Gibson / 1967 J-45 Cherry Red

The J-45 is a well-known and popular model among Gibson acoustic guitars. Used by artists such as Bob Dylan and Jackson Browne, its bright yet full-bodied sound makes it a versatile guitar suitable for a wide range of genres, from strumming folk songs to band sounds.

—A J-45 in Red

The J-45, introduced in 1942, was initially released with a sunburst finish, but in 1961, the cherry sunburst version appeared.

Then, from 1967 to 1969, J-45s with custom color finishes were released.

This particular instrument is one of those, a 16-inch round-shoulder model in a bright red color called cherry red.

The approximately 1.5mm thick white large pickguard is secured with four screws, a characteristic feature of pickguards used on rare color models.

The mahogany sides and back are finished in cherry red to match the top's coloring, resulting in a beautiful overall finish.

The rosewood fretboard features dot position markers.

A key feature is the narrow 40mm nut width neck.

This neck is easy to play, even in modern music that uses a handshake-like grip or frequent, hard chord changes.

The position markers on the side of the fretboard have a reddish tint because the rest of the guitar is painted cherry wood.

The neck is made of mahogany and finished in a cherry color.

Similar to the sides and back, the see-through finish allows the mahogany grain to show through, giving a warm feeling to the wood.

The rosewood upper belly bridge features an adjustable saddle, made of wood rather than ceramic.

This produces a thick, bright, yet cohesive and clear sound.

The headstock features a gold Gibson modern logo silkscreen.

The bell-shaped truss rod cover is made of one piece.

The tuning machines are KLUSON 3-in-line tuners.

The 4th string tuner shaft is bent, but tuning is still possible without problems.

Another characteristic of this instrument is the number 2 stamped on the back of the headstock.

This suggests that the neck was repainted at the factory.

As evidence, examining the neck's finish reveals that the mahogany grain is visible through the paint on the back of the headstock, whereas the neck's finish is thick enough that the grain is not visible.

While Sunburst and Cherry Sunburst are also popular J-45 colors, Cherry Red offers a unique charm that the former lack.
