A highly sought-after Gentleman model has just arrived, featuring a double-cut body, dual mutes, and simulated f-holes.
Endorsed by Chet Atkins and famously played by the legendary George Harrison on The Ed Sullivan Show, this model drew enormous attention at the time—becoming so popular that it was extremely difficult to obtain.
Enjoy the beauty and the uniquely refined “Gentleman” tone that can only be found in instruments from this era.

The headstock is stamped “57393,” and based on the serial number, we have identified this guitar as a 1963 model.
The pot codes date to 1964, suggesting it was manufactured and shipped during the transitional period between 1963 and 1964.

The 6122 Country Gentleman, introduced in 1958, was positioned as the top-tier model in the Chet Atkins series.
As you can see, its multilayer binding and gold Imperial tuners give it a truly luxurious and elegant appearance.

This particular instrument features the double-cutaway design, which was added to the lineup starting in 1962.
It is also equipped with the especially popular dual small mutes. While these mutes are not necessarily superior in functionality, their visual appeal alone makes them highly desirable—sometimes, looks are value enough.

To install the mute system, a large cavity was routed into the back of the body, which is covered by a back panel and cushion.
This so-called “back pad” does not contribute positively to the tone, but it offers a fascinating glimpse into the experimental design ideas of the era, adding undeniable vintage charm and romance.

Originally designed as a closed-body guitar without open f-holes to prevent feedback, the simulated f-holes are now loved simply because they look cool.
After all, when it comes to the 6122, simulated f-holes just feel right—though other versions are great as well.
Among the various 6122 specifications, later 1964 models feature Super’Tron pickups in the front position, but this earlier Filter’Tron configuration remains especially popular.

The guitar sports the angular block Gretsch logo, a long truss rod cover, and a distinctive zero fret.
Its beautiful ebony fingerboard is adorned with clean, simple thumbnail inlays.
As mentioned earlier, it is fitted with two patent-number Filter’Tron pickups, a highly desirable vintage specification.
The classic Gentleman sound—thick yet articulate, with excellent clarity and projection—is something you truly have to hear.

Vintage Gretsch guitars often suffer from deteriorated binding, but this example remains in relatively clean condition.
To the best of our observation, there are no major cracks, making it a solid and reassuring instrument for transport as well.

Condition & Notes:

  • Both body and neck appear to have been oversprayed
  • Refretted and re-nutted; set up for excellent playability (string height approx. 2.0 mm – 1.5 mm)
  • Bridge base has likely been replaced
  • Evidence of a filled endpin hole
  • Rear cushion shows partial tearing on the inside
  • Panel beneath the cushion shows cracking and warping due to age; secured with approximately three screws
  • Neck shows no unusual warping or issues and plays without problem
  • Comes with a deluxe case seen on late-1950s models, believed to be original
  • No accessories included other than the case
  • Mute mechanism functions, though it requires manual assistance (by hand, not just the knob) to move smoothly up and down

The color remains deep and rich, giving this guitar an exceptional presence and undeniable cool factor.
It’s the kind of instrument that brings joy simply by being in the room.
Given its highly desirable specifications, it naturally invites you to imagine the scenes and sounds of its era.
Even with added reverb, the note definition remains clear—making it an excellent match for ambient effects.

If you’ve been searching for one, or if this guitar has caught your eye, don’t hesitate.
This is a piece we can wholeheartedly recommend.
