In 1974, the Jazz Bass was about to undergo major changes. The bridge pickup was moved a little closer to the bridge, and the four-bolt necks were a thing of the past for the time being. The narrow maple neck with a C-profile was replaced by a thick, muscular U-profile. To match, the designers gave it a chic skunk stripe made of dark walnut. The white fingerboard binding and the block inlays made of mother of pearl celebrated their premiere. The "bullet" truss rod nut also made its debut. The tortoise pickguard was replaced by a black one. The American Vintage '74 Jazz Bass is equipped with all of these refinements. It is the only model in the new American Vintage Bass family to also offer a fingerboard made of maple or round-lam (laminated) rosewood. Both are equipped with white binding, block inlays made of mother of pearl and 20 vintage style frets. Other authentic features include an alder body with a urethane finish (ash on the natural finish model), a three-ply black/white/black pickguard, new American Vintage '74 Jazz Bass single coil and a vintage style bridge with "barrel" threaded saddles. The '70s-style open tuners feature the embossed "Fender" logo.
