________________________________
Burbank B♭ trumpet, 6☆ Large Bore, from the brand through which Donald Benge and Zig Kanstul revived the Benge sound.
Bell: 122mm / 6☆ yellow brass, lightweight
Bore: .470" / large bore
Finish: silver plated
Weight: 970g (measured)
Year: circa 2000
[Condition]
Small dent repair marks at the bell base, bell tail, and bell flare. Light scuffs and small dings throughout, but no plating loss or notable scratches. The 3rd slide stopper rod screw has been replaced with a tip-stop type. Interior cleaned, soft parts replaced, and serviced/adjusted throughout.
Burbank Trumpet was founded in the mid-1980s by Donald Benge, son of founder Elden Benge, and Zig Kanstul, who was deeply involved in Benge production, with the aim of recreating the sound of the still highly regarded Benge trumpets. Rather than simply reviving a name, the two — who knew the classic Benge intimately — created new designs and tooling and began production at Kanstul's factory.
This example pairs a 122mm 6☆ lightweight bell with a .470" large bore. The bell responds quickly, producing a bright, lustrous sound. It has the generous airflow of a large bore without the air rushing out uncontrollably, and responds well even to compact, focused air — a feel true to the Benge lineage.
At 970g, it is not as extremely light as early Burbanks (under 900g), but has a moderate weight in line with modern lightweight trumpets. As a result, it is not biased solely toward quick response: it keeps a solid core from the middle to upper register and opens up with rich color when pushed. A well-balanced way to enjoy the 6☆ lightweight bell and large bore combination without needing to brace yourself.
Rather than chasing a vintage Benge itself, this is a horn for experiencing how Donald Benge and Zig Kanstul reinterpreted the Benge character. Recommended for anyone who wants a bright, lustrous, satisfying American trumpet.
Accessories: none (instrument only; no case included)
