Unlike many other Gibson models that switched to maple necks starting in 1975, this model consistently retained a mahogany neck. It appeals to fans who desire 1950s-style specifications while still appreciating the distinct vibe of the 1970s. This particular instrument features a wraparound bridge and a dark sunburst finish; its serial number dates it to 1974 (falling within the 1974–early 1975 range). It previously underwent a modification to accommodate a full-sized humbucker in the bridge position, but the enlarged cavity has since been carefully filled back in with mahogany. The pickups consist of an original "SSC-1" with clear bobbins in the neck position and a P-90 with black bobbins (from a different era) in the bridge position—likely installed when the guitar was reverted from its humbucker configuration. Three of the four potentiometers (excluding the neck volume control) have been replaced, as have the tuning machines, which are now modern Kluson-style units. The instrument delivers a superb, rich sound with abundant harmonics, characterized by the combination of a thick, powerful neck pickup tone and a bridge pickup that possesses an "aged" quality developed over time.
