Epiphone ES-339 Pro P90 Wine Red Transparent combines the open character of a semi-hollow guitar with compact Les Paul-style dimensions. Rare color, strong P90s and, after our work on it, a truly dreamlike instrument to play.

Here we have an Epiphone ES-339 Pro P90 from May 2014 – in the really rare transparent Wine Red (WR) finish.

We always keep a close eye out for exactly these models, because they are simply something special. So far, we have only had 2014 models with P90 pickups in our hands. Later years do exist, but they almost always seem to appear only in Pelham Blue.

The 339 is perfect for players who love the feel of a semi-hollow guitar, but find a classic 335 too large or too bulky. Body-wise, it is only slightly larger than a Les Paul and almost identical in size to a Casino Coupe. That makes it extremely comfortable against the body.

At around 3.27 kg, it is also pleasantly lightweight – a real advantage on stage as well.

The neck is rather slim, feels very comfortable and leans slightly towards a D-shape. The fingerboard feels a tiny bit wider than on a typical Les Paul with a 60s neck.

The factory fretwork, however – as so often – was not really convincing. That is why we put in some proper work here: the frets were carefully leveled, polished and the guitar was perfectly set up. Now it plays buttery smooth and direct.

In our opinion, the Epiphone P90R PRO and P90T PRO pickups are really well done. Powerful, open and with exactly the right amount of character. There is really no reason to swap them out.

Sonically, it is a real rock machine with a blues soul – but it also does surprisingly well in jazz territory.
