Reinhart Effects Line Drive pedal
This pedal is designed and built by Jacob Reinhart in Toledo Ohio.
Jacob Reinhart's Line Drive sits on the exact opposite end of the sonic spectrum. It isn't meant to destroy your tone; it's designed to save, enhance, and optimize it.
The Line Drive is a utility pedal engineered to be a 1-to-1 clone of the classic MXR Line Driver. It is a simple tool designed to tackle two major challenges on an active pedalboard: signal loss and volume boosting.
The Architecture & Controls
Unlike a lot of standard clean boosts, the Line Drive features a clever layout that lets you choose exactly how it interacts with your rig. It offers the option to switch between two distinct modes of operation:
- Regular Buffer Mode: When you run long cables on stage or string together a massive chain of true-bypass pedals, your guitar signal naturally degrades, losing its high-end sparkle and "punch" (a phenomenon known as tone suck). Setting the Line Drive to buffer mode converts your guitar's high-impedance signal into a low-impedance signal. This preserves your natural clarity and tone, making it sound like you're plugged directly into your amplifier.
- Boost Mode: In this mode, the pedal acts as a transparent clean boost. It takes your existing tone and simply makes it louder without adding unwanted coloring, clipping, or distortion. It is perfect for kicking on during a guitar solo to cut through the mix, or pushing the front end of a tube amplifier into natural overdrive.
The Construction
True to the Reinhart Effects philosophy, the Line Drive avoids the modern, automated manufacturing shortcuts common in massive factory-produced pedals.
- Through-Hole Electronics: It is entirely handmade using traditional through-hole components rather than automated surface-mount (SMD) parts. Guitar purists highly value this build style because it is incredibly rugged and much easier to repair or modify down the road.
- True Bypass: When the pedal is disengaged, it completely steps out of the way of your signal chain.
Where do you place it?
Because it serves a dual purpose, your placement depends entirely on what you need it to do:
- At the very front of your board: Ideal if you are using it primarily as a Buffer to protect your guitar's raw signal from a long chain of effects.
- At the very end of your board (or in the effects loop): Ideal if you are using it as a Boost to purely lift your overall volume for solos without changing how your overdrive or distortion pedals compress.
- Right before your dirt pedals: Ideal if you want the Boost to slam your distortion pedals with a hotter signal, driving them into a thicker, more saturated gain territory.
