Alesis QS7 76-key polysynth
Marketed by Klassic Keys GB (Ashby-de-la-Zouch, England).
The QS7 is a powerful easy-use synthesizer from Alesis. OK, its now 27 years old, but as a general purpose (portable) synth, its still hard to find anything better....."bread & butter" instruments are clearly marked in "groups" for instant stage sound selection...and the actual sounds still hold up well (and can be stacked/split etc). With 76 keys (6+ octaves), 64 voices of polyphony, 16 part multitimbrality plus tons of memory and expandability, what is there not to like? Superb for gigging, rehearsals, recording...and uses a standard kettle mains cord (220Vac), so no stoopid wall wart to lose.....hoorah!
This particular QS7 has clearly never been gigged. All switches, pots/buttons, faders, wheels etc work perfectly; as do all the keys (velocity/pressure). There are also a few "eensy" blemishes/scratches if you look for them, as would be expected after 27 years....
Attached video illustrates some of the ROM sounds....its actually a QS6 being played, but they are the same sounds...KKGB also have a QS6 for sale at £165, as it happens (WITH the correct external power supply).
The QS models have 8 MB of ROM samples (512 presets!) and use digital additive/subtractive sample playback synthesis to create high quality stereo grand pianos, organs, strings, drums/percussion, brass, woodwinds, new and classic synth textures, General MIDI, and rhythmic/sonic loops. However, Alesis had not yet fully anticipated the dance craze and so this is not one of those "physical-modelling" synths that began appearing at the same time. Oh dear, what a shame, never mind.....better play proper music, then......with 64-voice polyphony!
The QS7 implements the powerful QS Modulation Matrix, allowing users to assign virtually any controller source to any modulation parameter. There's an onboard multi-effects processor (based on the QuadraVerb 2) with four totally discrete effects busses that include reverb, delay, rotary speaker simulation, distortion, chorus and much more. With a direct Mac or PC hook-up, loading patches and editing via software is a breeze! QS synths shipped with Alesis' Sound Bridge software for Mac/PC which lets you write AIFF and WAV samples, Standard MIDI Files and Program data to PCMCIA Flash or SRAM cards. It can play Standard MIDI file sequences from the expansion cards without the use of an external sequencer.
Alesis QS series was a HUGE global success when launched...thousands were sold around the globe; it has earned its niche as a "classic" instrument, for sure....robustly made, with a steel chassis and top panel, with tough end-cheeks...full credit due to the Alesis design team!
