Capture the authentic vintage sound with this Stratocaster®️ pickup set, a must-have for classic guitar enthusiasts!
The pre CBS pickups on his guitars (like the Telecaster®️ and Stratocaster®️) were made using key materials that defined their unique sound, one of which was high-quality magnetic wire.
In the late 1950s, L.F used Formvar-coated magnetic wire to wind the coils of his pickups. This type of wire was favored for its excellent ability to transmit electrical signals clearly and accurately, resulting in a distinctive, bright tone.
The enameled copper wire coated with Formvar, used in PRE CBS pickups in the 1950s, was produced by companies like Phelps Dodge, one of the leading suppliers of conductive materials at the time.
Phelps Dodge was a U.S. company known for producing high-quality magnetic wire, making it one of the most important suppliers of magnetic cables for various applications, including guitar pickups. Phelps Dodge’s wire, particularly the Heavy Formvar variety, was known for its wear resistance, high conductivity, and durability, making it ideal for manufacturing pickup coils.
The Formvar is a type of insulating enamel used to coat magnetic wire. Heavy Formvar had a thicker layer of insulation, which helped improve the clarity and fidelity of the signal transmitted through the pickup. This property was crucial in achieving a bright and balanced sound.
By using Phelps Dodge’s Heavy Formvar magnetic wire, Fender was able to craft pickups with high tonal quality, contributing to the fame of Pre CBS for their bright and dynamic sound, especially in the early models like the Telecaster®️ and Stratocaster®️.
Phelps Dodge Wire Today
Although Fender no longer uses exactly the same materials or techniques as in the 1950s, the legacy of that magnetic wire, particularly Phelps Dodge Heavy Formvar, is still highly valued among guitarists and pickup manufacturers. Pickups made with Phelps Dodge wire from that era are highly prized for their vintage tone, and many modern pickup makers strive to recreate that sound using similar materials.
