Panduri or fanduri

The panduri is a traditional Georgian string instrument, commonly associated with the regions of Eastern Georgia, particularly Kartli and Kakheti. It is a fretted lute with three strings (sometimes four in modern adaptations) and is often used to accompany folk songs, dances, and polyphonic singing, which is a hallmark of Georgian music.

Key Characteristics of the Panduri:

• Construction: Typically made from a single piece of wood, the body of the panduri is hollowed out, and the top is usually made of softwood, such as pine. It has a long, narrow neck and a small, rounded body.

• Strings: The traditional panduri has three gut or nylon strings. Modern variations sometimes use metal strings.

• Tuning: The strings are tuned in different ways depending on the region and the type of song being played. A common tuning is G–C–E or D–A–D.

• Playing style: The panduri is played by plucking or strumming the strings, often in accompaniment to singing. Its simplicity allows the player to create rhythm and melody simultaneously.
