Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a nice and rarer Turner 34X model microphone from the 1940's with the heavily deco styled influence that comes with satin chrome finish. This is one of the most widely recognized microphones ever produced and is now replicated by the Heil Microphone Company. Their newer model is called "The Fin" and is often seen here on Ebay and Reverb. This 34X comes with a short cable in which to operate and the period Atlas DS-5 desk stand in which to display.
The 34 series came in two different styles over the 20 years it was produced with the only changes coming in the lower half that carried the Turner badge. The 34X microphone came only the crystal element which did not hold up well with time and they rarely ever work today.
Pic # 2 is from an old Turner advertisement showing the 34X and it's basic characteristics.
I'll admit it's not the prettiest 34 X out there but if you are more worried about having one you can actually use for just about any situation...then this will do nicely.
I decided to take liberties to remove the original element as it was dead and install a high quality Shure dynamic element that sounds very much like a strong crystal element like this mic originally came with. The element is omni-directional so it picks up more background noise than a uni-directional element. It's higher pitched and void of bass so it sounds just like the original crystal element but on steroids with a very strong signal. The tone is very old school "rockabilly". Again, absolutely no bass. The element has been fitted with a soft foam insert held in place which merely the tension of the housing just as the original crystal element was. It will not come loose either.
As you can see the satin chrome finish is in very nice overall shape though there is some small spots of pitting and other typical wear. The stainless steel screen shows no wear. The screen is free of any holes or dents. There are no dent's, fractures or missing pieces anywhere on the mic. An easy 8 on a scale of 1 - 10. The Turner badge is slightly worn but still completely legible. The joint mechanism works flawlessly and the tension is adjustable. The threads for both the stand and cable are perfect.
A vintage cable is provided but only 6 inches in length. The cable is soft, pliable and comes with a modern Switchcraft male XLR end connector. Simply attach any longer male XLR cable of any length and you are good to go. This will sound much stronger however if you use a female XLR to male 1/4 inch cable. Just a heads up.
The mic will screw onto just about any desk or floor stand as it has the universal 5/8 X 27 thread.
The vintage (and period late 1940's) Atlas DS-5 model desk stand is included which compliments the mic nicely. This DS-5 was the very first generation DS-5 and has a unique two tier waterfall design. Atlas only made this early DS-5 for a few short years before the design was completely changed.
The DS-5 has a heavier cast iron painted base with chrome riser that makes this a very stable platform for the 34X mic. The stand is in very nice physical condition and just needed 3 new felt pads on the bottom. The chrome riser shows just lite wear.
The mic with stand is appx 12 inches tall X 6 inches wide. A stunning combo that will grab attention anywhere it's displayed.
