Catalinbread / SFT
Catalinbread / SFT

The Catalinbread SFT is an overdrive pedal that recreates the Ampeg tones that made history, from gGet Ya~h to gDesert Sound.h

The Ampeg tone has always been right there. Historically, early Ampeg was a manufacturer catering to jazz purists. As a result, its origins lie in a style distinct from popular genres like country and rock, which were dominated by Fender and Marshall.
Looking at Ampeg amplifiers from a design perspective, it becomes clear that they were influenced more by the world of hi-fi than by guitarists. This is evident in their approach to vacuum tubes, gain stages without cathode capacitors, and the implementation of the Buxsandor tone control. Furthermore, Ampeg never stopped innovating. The gFlip-Toph combo is a prime example of this. It goes without saying that there were also amplifiers where the tightness of the speaker baffle could be adjusted using a torsion bar.

The most significant aspect of Ampegfs innovation was its approach to musical genres. It did a complete 180-degree turnaround from the jazz purism that had prevailed until then. The catalyst for this was the Rolling Stonesf 1969 U.S. tour. At that time, to support the Rolling Stones?whose amplifiers had been confiscated at the Canada-U.S. border?Ampeg built eight SVT amplifier prototypes, plus one backup unit.
That resilient, rich guitar and bass sound?familiar to anyone whofs heard gGet Your~h?was produced using the VT40 and VT22, and it defined the Stonesf sound well into the late 1970s.

Since then, the Ampeg SVT has remained the standard bass amplifier for rock fnf roll.
Josh, a leading guitarist in the stoner rock scene, chose the SVT for a live performance in Palm Desert, California. His breathtaking guitar sound took its name from the venue and came to be known as the gDesert Sound.h

The Catalinbread SFT is an overdrive pedal developed with inspiration from this legendary SVT. That unique sound?not gdistorted,h yet not quite gcleanh either. Itfs the sound found only in the finest tube amps: raw, resilient, and highly responsive. Reproducing that in a pedal was no easy feat.
Itfs also difficult to create a pedal that can function as a fierce JFET fuzz pedal. The SFT manages to do both.
We identified the precise bias points throughout the entire gain stage, fine-tuned the tone stack, and built a circuit capable of handling the correct pick attack and resonance. The SFT works perfectly even with the low E string.
