Developed as the flagship of Neumann’s Solution-D range, the D-01 combines exceptional capsule engineering with advanced digital technology. Its large diaphragm condenser capsule delivers a natural, detailed sound, while a custom A/D converter captures the capsule’s full 130 dB dynamic range. The result is a microphone designed to preserve the character, nuance and expression of every performance.

Capture every detail

The D-01 offers a smooth, balanced response across 15 selectable polar patterns, including omnidirectional, cardioid, figure-8 and twelve intermediate settings. This flexibility allows you to tailor the microphone’s pickup to the performer, instrument and recording space.

With precise transient response, just 8 dB-A of self-noise and sound pressure handling up to 138 dB SPL without preattenuation, the D-01 captures both delicate passages and powerful performances with clarity. Its uncolored sound provides a versatile foundation for mixing and further processing.

Digital control at the source

Supporting 24-bit output at sample rates up to 192 kHz, the D-01 delivers its signal through an AES42 digital interface. Integrated processing includes digital gain, an adjustable low-cut filter, a peak limiter, compressor/limiter functions and a de-esser.

Settings can be adjusted remotely using Neumann’s RCS software and stored directly in the microphone. This allows engineers to hear the effect of changes from the listening position, while remotely controlled signal LEDs provide visual cues for performers.

Versatility for the studio

From expressive vocals and acoustic guitar to piano, upright bass, strings, wind instruments, drums and percussion, the D-01 brings natural sound and flexible control to a wide range of recording sessions. Its expansive dynamic range also makes it particularly well suited to detailed sampling work.

Product status and software compatibility

The Solution-D range was discontinued from Neumann’s product portfolio in 2021. Neumann guarantees service for Solution-D hardware until 31 December 2030. Service beyond that date is not guaranteed.

RCS is legacy 32-bit software, also available as a VST plug-in. Neumann lists compatibility with Windows 98SE through Windows 10 and Mac OS 8.6 through Mac OS X 10.14.6. There will be no further updates to the RCS software.

A few notes:

• Exceptionally detailed sound. In my opinion, it remains Neumann’s most advanced microphone. A complete set originally cost around €9,000. Its revealing character can be unforgiving of some voices; depending on the singer and the desired sound, a more forgiving microphone such as a U 87 or SM57 may be a better fit.
• An AES42 interface is required to control microphone settings such as polar pattern and digital gain. The interface is not included.
• Hardware service is guaranteed until 31 December 2030. Please bear this date in mind when considering the purchase.
