A very rare travel double bass by Klaus Roeder (1937–2025), a luthier who formerly lived in the Taunus region. He studied violin and guitar before devoting himself fully to instrument making around 1975. Prior to that, he had acquired extensive knowledge and experience in Dieter Hense’s workshop. There, he also came into contact with other guitar makers such as Reinhold Seiffert, Kurt Hoyer, Josip Krog, Stefan Rössler, Ernest Köröskenyi—and, of course, Dieter Hopf.
Roeder’s own design for a portable and fully electrified double bass is unique and particularly appealing to street musicians. In addition to the pickup at the end of the fingerboard, the instrument features a built-in speaker on the back. The instrument is labeled on the inside and is hand-signed and dated (August 1990).
Length 159 cm, width 46 cm, scale length 95 cm, nut width 45 mm, extendable tailpiece to approx. 32 cm (total height of the instrument is then 194 cm)
The bass is in good condition with some signs of age and wear: There are a few professionally restored cracks in the top and back, as well as minor dents. The bridge is warped and should be replaced. The pickup works; the speaker on the back could not be tested. The instrument comes in its original Bergma fabric case.
