The Rex Bassking BA200B is a 20-watt Australian-made valve amplifier with an unusual history stretching from the final years of General Music production through to its eventual release decades later. General Music, the manufacturing arm of Melbourne's Lamberti Bros, produced the Bassking from the late 1960s until around 1973.
Towards the end of production, Frank Lamberti arranged a final run of approximately 100 Bassking amplifiers using the remaining components at the factory. Rather than being released at the time, these amplifiers remained unused and stored at the Lamberti Bros premises for more than three decades.
Around 2008, the Lamberti family decided to bring the remaining amplifiers into service. The work was undertaken by Lou Dallariva, who had worked at the Lamberti Bros factory during the early 1970s. Each amplifier was serviced, tested and modified, with ageing components replaced and the circuit updated for reliable modern use.
The restored Bassking combines its original Australian valve amplifier heritage with new electrolytic capacitors and resistors, Electro-Harmonix valves and correct biasing. The cabinet was finished in Australian-made vintage vinyl and fitted with a Celestion G12H 12-inch speaker.
Despite its modest 20-watt rating and Bassking name, the amplifier delivers considerable clean headroom with a strong, articulate valve response. Its relatively clean character also makes it particularly well suited to pedals, providing a straightforward valve platform that can be driven and shaped externally.
