The X-77 is a well-specified late-era cassette multitracker from Fostex — a format that has come back around in a serious way among home recording enthusiasts and lo-fi producers chasing the warmth and character of tape. The X-77 combines a six-input mixer with a high-performance four-track cassette recorder in a single compact unit. The double-speed tape transport runs at 9.5cm/s for improved frequency response and lower noise, with switchable half-speed at 4.75cm/s for instrument rehearsal mode and pitch manipulation. Dolby C noise reduction keeps the noise floor in check, and the full-logic transport controls handle punch in/out via optional footswitch with a rehearsal function that lets you practice the punch without committing to tape. Four-track simultaneous recording, zero-return with auto-playback, and a MIDI/Tape sync function for locking up external sequencers and drum machines round out a genuinely capable package. A clean, practical, and musically useful piece of analog recording history — and one that arrived in excellent shape with its original box.
