Terry Bozzio's DW - 2.5x10" Prototype, Brass Piccolo Tom, One-Off Development Drum Mid-to-Late 1990's
Terry Bozzio's influence on modern drumming is immense!
Terry Bozzio redefined the drum set, transforming it into a fully melodic, orchestral instrument. He achieved legendary status in the 1970s by conquering Frank Zappa's notoriously unplayable "The Black Page". His fierce technicality blended with deep groove and intense musicality pushed his band Missing Persons into the New Wave mainstream and famously anchored Jeff Beck’s the powerhouse trio. His pioneering use of melodic ostinatos and tuned percussion expanded the boundaries of drum design, tuning, and acoustic engineering. His Melodic Drumming & the Ostinato and Solo Drums instructional videos inspired generations of drummers, demonstrating that the musical possibilities of a drum set are endless.
We're proud to present THE TERRY BOZZIO DRUM COLLECTION. The collection includes artifacts from his virtually every era of his career, including entire gargantuan drum sets, snare drums, individual toms, cymbals, cases, promotional items and more.
Here's one of the rarer items in Terry's collection. This 2.5x10" DW Prototype Brass Piccolo Tom was an experimental drum from the early stages of development. It represents a fascinating glimpse into Drum Workshop's process of creating Terry's legendary melodic drum orchestras.
Although fitted with a standard DW Collector's Series "All-Maple Shell" badge, the shell is constructed from brass, making this an obvious factory prototype. DW frequently collaborated with Terry Bozzio to develop custom drums and specialized configurations that pushed well beyond their standard production offerings. Prototype instruments often received whatever badges or hardware were available during assembly before final production specifications were determined.
The ultra-shallow 2.5x10" brass shell produces an exceptionally bright, articulate voice with outstanding projection and sensitivity. Rather than functioning as a conventional tom, this drum served as one of the individual melodic voices within Terry's famous chromatically tuned drum orchestra.
The original Attack drumhead retains Terry's handwritten "F" pitch designation and signature, documenting the exact note this drum occupied within his elaborate tuning system. The shell also displays evidence of a previously installed mounting system, with unused mounting holes remaining
