Given that original Op-Amp Big Muffs from the late 1970s are selling for exorbitant prices, Mike Matthews decided to reissue this classic pedal at a price that many players can afford. The new Op-Amp Big Muff's circuitry faithfully replicates that of the era also known as the IC or V4 Big Muff, and adds several practical features such as a compact die-cast chassis and true bypass.
The Op-Amp Big Muff gained widespread attention when the talented Billy Corgan first used it on Smashing Pumpkins' 1993 album "Siamese Dream." After filming a demo video of the amp, Billy Corgan commented on the reissue model: "The magic is still in the box. I can still get what I'm looking for." - Mike Matthews
This pedal uses op-amps instead of transistors as amplification elements to produce its signature sound, and the gain stage is configured as three stages instead of the conventional four. Kit Rae, a Big Muff collector and history expert, describes the sound as follows: "It's a very loud and destructive Big Muff sound, with more distortion. It's perfect for grunge, thick, wall-of-a-wall distortion, heavy rhythms, and lead playing."
