The beautiful BBC LL88 analog audio transformer set. We have our own way of wiring these chaps that give a passive boost of 4db - so you can use them for creative saturation (esp with the added switchable distortion circuit) if needed - they excel at audio enhancement ... widening mixes, drums, guitars and synths etc. We mainly use these on the mixbus though to add analog weight and 3d to mixes, to soften harshness and to glue the soundstage. In all 3 music scenarios on the video - the more we push into them (we use Logic's i/o utility for this) the more 'placed' and settled the transient material gets - there's a slight (and very pleasing) widening of the stereo field - everything starts to sound more 3d and easier on the ear - prolly why a lot of mastering guys use them. The clipper circuit does a lot of things from helping shave the edges off transients (and adding perceived loudness) to adding a beautiful energy and bloom to the program material. Balanced jacks in and out - put some real top level analog in that mixing / mastering chain!
