The SJ-200: A Natural Beauty with Flame Maple and Distinguished Presence
Gibson / 2000 SJ-200
Gibson's SJ-200, often called the ‘King of Flat-Tops,’ remains a popular flagship model for Gibson. A 2000 model has arrived.
The origins of this model trace back to before the war.
It is known that in 1937, Gibson partnered with Ray Whitley, a popular Western movie actor and singer, to develop the design. At the time, creating and releasing guitars modeled after popular movie stars was considered an effective promotional strategy for new instruments. The flamboyant decoration and large body were likely designed to catch people's attention.
Since its release in 1938, it has been cherished by numerous musicians, including Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, George Harrison (The Beatles), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Pete Townshend (The Who), Emmylou Harris, The Edge (U2), and Ron Wood (The Rolling Stones).
Production halted during the war but resumed in 1947. The label still bore the pre-war designation SJ-200, but around this time it began being sold as the J-200, with a new color variation, Blonde (Natural), also introduced. Subsequently, Gibson's characteristic specification changes, such as to the tuners, bridge, and pickguard, were repeatedly implemented.
The SJ-200 arriving this time features a stunning natural finish, with beautifully balanced flame throughout the neck and body, presenting an elegant presence befitting Gibson's top-tier models. It resembles late 1950s characteristics, featuring Kluson-style gold tuners, a no-border engraved pickguard, a mustache bridge with cutouts, and a checkered backstrip.
The Super Jumbo body produces a bright, vibrant, and resonant sound. It delivers solid low end, which can sometimes be lacking, resulting in a rich, sophisticated tone.
Even among new releases, opportunities to see the flagship J-200 model have become increasingly rare. After arriving at our store, an acoustic specialist craftsman meticulously adjusted it, prioritizing playability and sound. This highly recommended instrument is in excellent playing condition, fully realizing its potential.
