Gaetano Guadagnini - 1831

Violin maker (1796-1852)

Extremely rare Violin, came to Brazil many moons ago, from an Italian family long gone!

Here are the specs on the Guadagnini family history including the family tree!

G.B. Guadagnini's grandson Gaetano Il inherited the family workshop in 1817, when he was 21 years old. At first he carried on the family's primary business of repairing and restoring instruments, and soon began to make guitars, for which he is well known. Posthumous inventory of the shop shows that Gaetano also bought and sold many old bowed instruments, mainly from Mirecourt, and records indicate that the business did quite well.

Past auctions at Tarisio, has a record for this maker of $186,764.00 in October of 2020!

Violins by his hand are somewhat rare and date from around 1830-1840. They are somewhat large and show some characteristics of the French school, which was popular in Turin at the time, and in any case bear no resemblance to the work of G.B. Guadagnini. Gaetano sustained some sort of business relationship with nobleman and violin maker Alessandro D'Espine, though the difference in their status suggests that Gaetano worked for him in some capacity. Gaetano's step-brother Felice also worked in the shop, and it is possible that he was the first in his generation of the family to take up violin making seriously after learning the craft from Gaetano.

Italian violin by Gaetano Guadagnini restored with period materials, animal glue, imported Indian lacquer applied with oil, and sanded with powdered pumice.

The violin is ready for action. Made in the early 19th century, it boasts a rich sound. A very rare and highly valued instrument!

It has an engaging and deep sound, very full-bodied and unlike traditional violins. Deep warmer and more enveloping sound as a very rich lower registers, a really beautiful low end a very full-bodied sound and it’s very notable for its full body G and D strings, but still has a good projection on the E string, without sacrificing power at the top end. Has a very smooth and velvety timbre sound, and the overall sound is a bit less bright than a Stradivarius, but has a smooth and singing quality, no corners or hard edges when you are playing. It also blends very well so its rounded tone makes a very suited for solo and orchestral playing.

A very old instrument with a wonderful sound. An atypical violin for discerning musicians!

Instrument tuned by a luthier, new strings, with a powerful and balanced sound!

Comes with a bow and case!
