2023 Tokai AJB114 GMB/R Bass Gunmetal Blue Metallic

Professor’s Notes

Imported directly from Japan, Tokai’s Precision-style basses carry the same hallmarks of craftsmanship and materials selection that make their Jazz models so admired. The APB114 offers authentic vintage-style P-Bass tone with the refinement and build consistency Tokai is known for. This near mint example comes dressed in a striking Gunmetal Blue Metallic finish with matching headstock, a color rarely seen on traditional Precision models. The feel, resonance, and sheer authority of this bass make it an outstanding choice for players seeking the classic split-coil punch with boutique-level fit and finish.

Overview

While the blueprint is classic 1960s Precision Bass, Tokai’s interpretation elevates the formula through premium materials and meticulous construction. The APB114 features a 2-piece alder body, a thick slab rosewood fretboard, and upscale hardware choices including Gotoh FB30 tuners and Tokai’s BB-VB bridge. The Gunmetal Blue Metallic finish with matching headstock lends it a modern edge while retaining vintage sensibility. The gloss maple neck’s U-profile feels substantial yet fast in the hand, topped with a warm cinnamon-hued 9.5-inch radius rosewood fretboard, bone nut, white dot markers, and 20 precisely dressed frets.

Electronics and Tone

The Tokai PB-Vintage MK3 pickup delivers everything you expect from a finely voiced Precision Bass: full, authoritative lows with excellent note definition, strong and punchy midrange presence, and a rounded top end that stays smooth and articulate without harshness. Roll back the tone knob for classic thump and warmth, or leave it wide open for clarity and definition that cuts through a mix. The traditional single-volume, single-tone control layout keeps operation simple and intuitive. The APB114’s electronics are voiced to let the natural resonance of the instrument shine through—making this bass a reliable workhorse in studio or on stage. High-quality 250k pots are paired with a 0.047µF poly film cap. No modifications are noticeable to the standard P-Bass wiring and everything is in proper working order.
