Sonor - K170 "Chicago" 3-Piece Drum Set (1965-1966) - MF Marine Turquoise
The K170 was part of Sonor’s mid-1960s Teardrop series, sometimes nicknamed “Chicago” for export to the U.S. market. This was a kit targeted at jazz and combo drummers looking for compact, stylish sets during the British Invasion era. Produced only for a short window (1965–1966), making it rarer than some later Teardrop configurations.
- Bass Drum: 20"x14"
- Tom-Tom: 13"x8" (mounted)
- Floor Tom: 16"x16"
Beech shells with reinforcement rings 45° bearing edges, classic Sonor Teardrop lugs and triple-flanged steel, chrome plated hoops.
The internal muffler in the bass drum is great example of 1960 German engineering. The MF (Marine Finish) Turquoise Pearl wrap finish was catalogued only in the mid-1960s, making it one of the more collectible Sonor wrap options.
The sound is warm, rounded, and vintage, with strong low-end. The 20" bass drum provides some really punchy projection. The finish shows lots of scratches and scuffs, pretty normal for marine pearl finishes. Under lights this set looks electrifying.
The photos tell all. The set looks beautiful. Nothing damaged, broken, missing or altered.
