Over a Year of Meticulous Testing

of Char’s Historic Guitars, Pedals, and Amps

During the development process, VEMURAM had access to Char’s historic guitars, amps, and effects—including his essential Watkins “Copicat Etape echo, a range of Mustangs, his  E9 Burgundy Stratocaster, Les Pauls, SGs, and more—for over a year. By devoting an immense amount of time to thoroughly analyze these pieces of gear, they moved forward with the development of this new pedal.

Overdrive Pedals—Creating a New Sound

Among the many famous overdrive pedals Char has used over the years, one standout he has especially favored is the Klon “CENTAUR. EDevelopment began by studying both Char’s personal Centaur as well as several units owned by VEMURAM, choosing the one with the best sound as the core reference. With the goal of crafting a truly satisfying new drive tone for Char, attention then turned to the boost functionality found in other key gear Char uses—like the BOSS “CE-1 Echorus and the Watkins “Copicat. EAs these devices are integral to Char’s signature sound, the nuances they provide were incorporated into the new pedal. Multiple rounds of field testing—both live and in the studio—were conducted with Char’s direct feedback. Through repeated adjustments and fresh ideas, a new overdrive pedal was born, combining evolved drive tone with unparalleled functionality.

Two Distinct Tunings in One Unit

During the year-plus development process, two of the prototype circuits particularly stood out to Char. Though fundamentally the same, each uses specific parts and component values that yield different tonal nuances. Char was equally fond of both sounds and wanted both for real-world live scenarios, leading to the luxurious decision to house both circuits in a single enclosure. The first channel offers a somewhat “dry Evintage tone, while the B-ch (Bright Channel) delivers a brighter, more aggressive, and powerful sound. Neither is designated as the main channel; players can easily switch between them via footswitch depending on environment or preference. Each channel also has its own LEVEL control, enabling versatile applications and creative uses.

Extensive Control Features for Fine-Tuning

The primary controls on the SPIRITONE are LEVEL (volume), GAIN (amount of overdrive), BASS (low-frequency EQ), TREBLE (high-frequency EQ), and LEVEL B-ch (volume for the Bright Channel). Additionally, it offers a SAT (saturation) trimmer for fine-tuning the characteristic “power tube saturation Ethat many guitarists find pleasing, as well as an input buffer ON/OFF switch. These features provide enough flexibility to match the pedal to a wide range of guitars, amps, and other gear, and allow precise adjustments to accommodate various venue acoustics.
