Here is a lovely example of German workmanship. This 1970s Framus Archtop Mandolin is a finely made beauty. Usually, we find mandolin design to be, well, lacking. Not in this case. It's pretty and curvy in all of the right places with a subtle burst, stylish soundholes and pickguard.
Framus instruments, made in West Germany are easily recognized for their unique design elments. Case in point is this model mandolin with its large 'cat's eye' sound holes, straight non-angled peg head, string bar, bolt-on neck and "zero fret".
Framus was among the first instrument manufacturers to include the zero fret feature
which, combined with the bolt on neck, makes the action extremely playable.
Crafted with a solid spruce top finished in the classic orange color, a solid maple neck and laminate maple back and sides, this mandolin is very sturdy and can stand up to a lot of wear and tear. This construction, along with its easy action and comfortability makes it an ideal instrument.
It is in remarkable condition with only a small nick in the top (see pics) and some minor checking on the sides to show it's age which looks really nice. It's solid and hand-crafted. There are no signs of warping or cracking and plenty of fret life. The tuners are tight and hold tune without issue. All original and well cared for.
The sound is bright and articulate with body thanks to select woods, master craftmanship and decades of seasoning.
