We are one of the only facilities in the Pacific NorthWest that buys, sells and restores reel to reel tape decks. We have over 35 years experience working on these units, and have the tools and test equipment to properly align and bring these decks to life.
We use MRL calibration tapes, and are dealers for ATR tape. We work on everything from mono tube machines to 2" 24 track studio decks. We are reeltoreeltech dot com!
We stock many types of ATR tape from 7" reels to 2", in several formulations. We have about 350 decks in stock at all times. If you haven't yet checked out our website, please do so. Under the 'about us' tab we have a bunch of articles regarding the 'great barn finds' that we've come across this year, netting us well over 100 decks and tons of parts.
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!
This is a Studer A80 1" layback machine. It was used to stripe audio on 1" videotape in the 1980s. (This machine has date stamps on it from July 1986 on the PC boards.). While the heads on the deck are 1", and it will play 1" audiotape, it stripes the audio right on the edge of the video or audio tape as shown in the head picture. The deck is a single speed, which is around 10 IPS, the videotape standard.
We received this deck in from a Toronto digitization facility's estate sale. The 1/2" 4 track deck we currently have listed here came from the same estate. As shown, the deck has an insanely low 462 hours of run time on the chassis.
When we got this deck, it was functional, but we decided to recap it regardless, since the Rifa, Frako and Philips capacitors are known to fail. We replaced about 150 capacitors on the transport and audio cards. We also replaced the pinch roller with a new one from Terry's Rubber Rollers.
Given the format of this deck, it is basically useless for audio use. HOWEVER.. Studer A80s are plentiful, and are designed to be modified, serviced, and have the format changed. (Recently we converted a 1/2" 4 track deck to a 1" 8 track, and it only took about 6 hours labor to do so.) The head stack is wired for 8 channels, and the channel chassis has 4 blank spaces, so you can add up to another 5 channels and change this to an 8 channel deck if desired. (it only has 4 power supply cables, so you'd have to supply 4 more of them for all 8 channels to get power.
We are offering this deck at a significantly lower price than what a typical A80 goes for. We figure that someone with a spare A80 or two could change the head block and other sundry pieces in the deck to change it to whatever format suits you. Or, if you have an aging and semi functional A80 that has seen better days and has worn parts, here's a very low hour unit to use as a parts unit, or to swap parts into to use this as the main deck.
We have verified the proper functionality of all three channels on this deck post-recapping and servicing. We have not calibrated record or playback levels, but we have verified that both play and record work. Everything from the meter lights to the record and ready lights are functional. We've put 10 hours on the deck since recapping it to ensure long term reliability.
Due to the technical knowledge needed to convert this deck to another format, we're selling this deck 'as described'. Do your research, check with a tech (or us!) as to what is needed to convert this deck, but any tech reading this knows that a conversion can be done. All of the Studer manuals are available online detailing the various boards, etc.
Cosmetically the deck was very dusty, but we've cleaned it throughout, and overall the transport has less marks and scrapes than many A80s we've seen through here.
**note that the reel clampdowns for the reel tables are included, they are in good shape, they're just not shown in the pictures**
Shipping- we will ship this deck in 2 crates, one for the electronics and one for the transport. The price shown is worst case to the East Coast. Shipping in the West will be somewhat less, and any excess will be refunded upon shipping. Pickup will be at a Forward Air dock near you. A residential delivery is available, but adds $150 to the shipping price, and that's not included with this listing.
Note also that the deck is in Vancouver BC, and with the value of the deck, we will need your business number (BIN) or SSN to clear customs with. The customs clearance charges are included with the listing, but the information is needed for the customs paperwork.
