This is the original version of the Fishman Rare Earth Humbucking stacked coil pickup. The original version has a 'brilliance switch' for a treble boost. With the newer version the switch was replaced with a volume wheel. Plus the newer version was re-voiced producing a slightly different voice and a bit less of the 'B' string presence. To my ears the original version definitely sounds better…than even a M1A.
In the "up" humbucking position, the switch provides a subtle, rising treble boost from 2 kHz to 20 kHz. This position is especially effective for adding a bit of extra sparkle to fingerstyle playing with more volume/voice.
In the "down" single coil position, the switch provides a flat response, which produces a mellower sound, well suited for strumming and flatpicking.
