1972 Maestro FZ-1S Fuzz-Tone, serial #4521, original CMI/Lincolnwood construction, original electronics, working condition, vintage cosmetic wear. Maestro Fuzz-Tone FZ-1S Super-Fuzz * Approx. date: circa 1972 * Serial: 4521 * Manufacturer: Maestro / Chicago Musical Instruments * Location: Lincolnwood, Illinois * Controls: Volume, Fuzz, Balance and Sustain * Power: 9V battery * Switch: Fuzz on/off * Construction: vintage hard-wired/point-to-point style construction * Finish: black metal enclosure with silver control panel * Condition: vintage cosmetic wear, with apparently original-style internal components The FZ-1S has four controls that make it considerably more versatile than the original FZ-1: Volume, Fuzz, Balance and Sustain. Reverb’s model information also identifies the FZ-1S as a U.S.-made 1970s fuzz/distortion with those four controls. The sound The FZ-1S is not a clone of the “Satisfaction” FZ-1. Its circuit is closer in concept to the Univox Super-Fuzz/Fender Blender-style approach, using cascaded amplification and transistor/diode clipping to produce a much more compressed, aggressive fuzz. You can expect: * Heavy, saturated fuzz * Strong sustain * Compressed response * Aggressive upper-mid/high-frequency character * Gritty, almost octave-like harmonic content in some settings * Much more extreme than an FZ-1A * Excellent for psychedelic, garage, hard-rock and early-’70s fuzz sounds
